Why is Recycling important?

recycling cartoon.jpg

Facts in UK

Every household in UK produces about 1 tonne of rubbish annually.
Each year in the UK households throw away over 29.1 million tonnes of waste, that's the same weight as 4.85 million male African Elephants!!!
so you see the need for us to recycle instead of burming & burying rubbish.

Recycling saves natural materials

Recycling saves primary material e.g. wood, oil and coal. Annually, each person in Europe uses 50 tonnes of primary material extracted from the earth, not including air and water. In Europe, this equates to extraction of 20 billion tonnes of material from earth each year!!!!!!

Recycling saves energy
Using recycled materials in the manufacturing process uses considerably less energy than that required for producing new products from raw materials.

Recycling reduces need for landfills
Rubbish today, compared to pre-1960s rubbish, contains more products that don't break down when they're put into the ground. Packaging waste makes up about 1/4 of all rubbish put into the refuse bins.

The amount of rubbish we throw is increasing for a number of reasons:
  • new packaging materilas and technology are being developed
  • lifestyle changes e.g. greater reliance on convenience/fast foods
  • increasing affluence, leading to greater consumption of goods
  • Increasing population.
We need to increase the ammount of rubbish that is recycled!!!!
