Achievements to date
1. Construction of 2 bio-sanitation centers in Kenya:
Bio-centers utilise biogas technology, at the same time, protect and preserve
environment in various ways. By fundraising, we were able to help Lunga Lunga
slums youth group build a bio-center. It was completed in 2009.
Benefits of bio-sanitation centers:
•
water supply outlet

provision of toilet and bathroom facilities
•
gas generated for lighting and cooking (cafeteria/bakery/communal kitchen)
•
Community facilities for hire: community hall, offices and restaurant space
with cooking gas installed
•
fertiliser oroduction for sale
•
members are paid dividends and income is generated to raise living
standards
•
children (3-10 Years) can access the toilets free of charge
•
Creation of employment opportunities
•
Increased community awareness on hygiene especially regarding water
collection, hand-washing and waste disposal

aged between ages of 16-40 years. The groups aim is to improve well-being of
members by a daily savings and credit programme.

environmental hygiene and conservation as well as empower themselves
economically.
Bio-center management:
•
The bio-center operates between 6.00am to 9.00pm daily serving an
average of 600 people.
•
It is a one-storey facility with a first floor which is a hall used for community
meetings.
•
The hall also acts as a community kitchen where a fee is charged to those
who want to cook or boil water
•
The center earns the group an average of Kshs. 20,000 /month(£153)
Making bio-center a reality:
•
Environclean interviews and shortlists an organised community group(CBO)
within a slum
•
A plan in consultation of entire community is drawn and an appropriate site
allocated by respective local authority or provincial administration
•
A project management and accountability team is set up
•
Training workshops e.g. hygiene, zero defecation, sanitation transformation,
business planning & operation maintenance are setup
•
The technical team in consultation with community prepare architectural
designs, drawings, bills of quantities and work plans
•
Designs submitted for approval to the city council of Nairobi, Department of
planning
•
On approval, the implementation begins which includes excavations,
completion of underground/sub-structure and superstructure works.
Sustainability of project(s):
•
Under the scheme, civic authorities provide the site for biogas toilets.
•
the sponsors, donors, donors provide 90% of the funds
•
The beneficiaries contribute 10%
•
To establish a certain level of ownership, its essential that beneficiaries
contribute to project
•
Environclean commits to maintaining facilities for 15 years, free of cost,
and revenue collected from either sale of energy produced from center(s) or
