Future Plans:
Biogas plants in Slaughter houses, markets: Environclean
would like to carry a pilot study on waste-to-energy in Kenya. By establishing in a slaughter house/market place. The plant is to
treat approx. 1,000 tons of slaughterhouse waste and other biomass per year.
The plant is to be built according to EU rules for treatment of slaughterhouse
waste (Regulation 1774/2003).
Composting facilities: The recycling of solid and organic waste is one
approach which has positive ramifications in creating informal employment and
offering an environmentally sound solution to waste management problems like Recycling.
composting are land-saving and pollution-reducing strategies. Environclean hope to assist
women set up mini-composting plant in Eastlands, Nairobi. One half of the solid
waste generated in Nairobi consists of organic matter.
Biofuel manufacture: Environclean
hope to start biofuel manufacture small scale in the deprived slums.
Other community initiatives:
Eco-schools: Provide environmental awareness trainings and
education to school going children in disadvantaged
areas in Kenya. This project aims
to raise awareness about how we can all take responsibility in looking after
our environment by:
- Providing environmental
education to local children and aim to raise awareness of significance of
environmental issues e.g. pupils are taught sustainable farming practices by
Environclean trainers. Crops grown are sold on a jumbo sale in the local
communities and profits ploughed back into project.
- Providing
curriculumn linked activities for schools to increase participation and with
community groups to raise awareness and participation in the kerbside
collections.
- Vocation
training: Providing vocational
training for the unemployed through the refurbishment and recycling of used
domestic appliances for resale in the local community at prices accessible to
all.
- Educating
the local community to consider the benefits of reuse, through the development
of a resource centre and better communication of the re-use message.
- Public
Environmental awareness training: Providing
environmental training e.g. horticulture and composting and undertake a variety
of species and habitat recovery projects. Demonstrate best practice in
sustainable construction and management and providing information about
renewable energy themes.
- Holding
several events, courses and projects focusing on the reuse, recycle and
composting themes on an ongoing basis.
Entrepreneurship Training Skills boot camp:
One of the things that people in the slums lack is
proper education but don’t confuse that with being dumb, Entrepreneurs are more often created
than born. Business skills, market economy understanding and decision-making
skills can be taught.
The interested entrepreneurs in
various slums have to be innovative, risk takers and decision makers hence
entrepreneurial training will be a critical element in the process of private
sector development.
Renewable energy initiatives: Environclean
wants to promote sustainable energy development through accelerated commercialization of energy efficiency and clean and renewable energy
technologies through an energy and environment programme it hope to create.
The overarching goal is to bring
about significant improvement in the quality of life of the people through
sustainable solutions linked to the development process and livelihoods.
Clean Village awards: Principal duty
of people is to take on negative trends in society. Development could be
achieved only by extending the scope of existing opportunities to more people,
even while creating new ones.
In
lieu to the fact that various bio-latrines are being built in various slums in
Nairobi, we hope to come up with some awards to honour people in the slums who
are doing much to make their surrounds pleasant by:
§ Regular
cleanups
§ Zero
defecation campaigns
§ Promotion of
renewable energy resources
§ Environmental
Conservation initiatives
§ Organic
farming
§ Artistic
events/activities that bring immense changes to their areas e.g. sports,
sculptures, theatre
Other
projects in the pipeline:
Briquetting
Solar
cook boxes
